The front set of plates in the larynx is known as thyroid cartilage; these two plates are known as ‘laminae.’ The name of the thyroid cartilage is because of its sharper edge rather than on the thyroid gland. In the Greek language, thyreos means ‘SHIELD SHAPE.’ The thyroid cartilage has two plates fused, an elevation, and a central ridge known as Adam’s apple. The fusion can be easily felt through the skin. It is also known as the largest cartilage of the larynx. Behind the shield, there are vocal cords. Posteriorly the borders of the thyroid cartilages look like horns, which are upward and downward.
The superior upward horns attach by the thyrohyoid bone to the hyoid bone and inferiorly the horns are attached to the cricoid cartilage at the cricothyroid joint.
The angle between the two plates of the thyroid cartilage is sharper, and it has seen more prominent and visible in men instead of women. The lower-pitched voice in males is also due to vocal cords in the larynx. The thyroid cartilage grows with age, especially visible in puberty. The thyroid cartilage does nothing with the gland but plays a role in protecting the vocal cord and maintaining pitch of voice and its production. Thyroid cartilage has nothing to do with the thyroid glands.
Thyroid gland:
The thyroid gland is an endocrine gland that is located in the neck.
This gland produces two hormones:
- T3 (triiodothyronine)
- T4 (thyroxine).
These hormones contain atoms of iodine. T3 contains three atoms and T4 contains four atoms of iodine. These biologically active atoms help the tissue work properly.
This gland is butterfly-shaped. It lies below the adam’s apple (the laryngeal prominence produced by the angle of thyroid cartilage). Hormones released by the thyroid gland are essential for the cells of the body to work. There are two lobes of the thyroid gland which lies above the windpipe.
Thyroid disorders mainly occur in women. But men, children, and adults can also develop this condition.
What thyroid hormones do?
Thyroid hormones maintain the metabolism of the body, which regulates the speed of working of the body. If the release of these hormones gets fast, the body starts working faster, which converts in an abnormal condition known as ‘HYPERTHYROIDISM.’ And if the hormonal release gets slow, the body slows down the work and develops a condition called ‘HYPOTHYROIDISM.’ These conditions lead to abnormal i.e., the fast heartbeat in hyperthyroidism and slow heart rate in hypothyroidism followed by increased activity of different organs as well as bowel movements and constipation in hypothyroidism. The most commonly developing condition is hypothyroidism.
Symptoms of thyroid disorders:-
For hyperthyroidism: weight loss, anxiety, sore eyes, fast heart rate, diarrhea, increased bowel movements.
For hypothyroidism: weight gain, depression, tiredness, slow heart rate, constipation.
Thyroid diseases can be treated and also can be prevented by taking supplements or medications prescribed by the physician.
